As I read through the Bible, my favorite thing to do is look for Jesus. Jesus said the whole Bible is talking about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39; Hebrews 10:7). He’s called many different things throughout God’s Word. Here are five more names for Jesus. How do they give us a more complete picture of His nature?

1. Messenger of the Covenant

The Old Testament looks forward to a “New Covenant” (Jeremiah 31:31-34, Ezekiel 36:24-28) in which God will make a way for people to walk with Him. In Malachi 3:1, Jesus is called the “Messenger” of that covenant. As John 1:17 says, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

2. Good Shepherd

In Psalm 23, one of the best-known passages in the Bible, David explains what it means to have the Lord for your Shepherd, and how secure it makes him feel. He is everything needed by the sheep: the One providing rest, protection, correction, food and water, as well as guidance, celebration and an eternal home. In John 10:11, Jesus reveals that He is this Good Shepherd, known by His sheep. He lays down His life for them, calls them by name, gives them eternal life, and keeps them secure from any who might want to take them from His hand. (John 10:27-30)

3. Founder and Perfecter of our faith

Jesus made a “new and living way” (Hebrews 10:20) by His sacrifice. He “has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him.” (2 Peter 1:3) He gives us “eternal life”, promising that we will “never perish.” (John 10:28) Hebrews 12:2 says that He is the “Founder and perfecter of our faith.” As He said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30)

4. Lord of Glory

Jesus is contrasted with the “rulers of this age” in 1 Corinthians 2:6-8: “None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.” Although He was once rejected and crucified, He will one day rule. (Philippians 2:5-11) He has left us here to give others the chance to come into His kingdom.

5. (God’s) Indescribable Gift

A correct response to all of this for us should be gratitude and service. (Romans 12:1) The Bible reminds us that “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32) After urging his readers to give in support of the Gospel, Paul reminds them that God gave everything: “Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15)

Christ really is everything to us. “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” (2 Corinthians 1:20) The name "Jesus" means "Yahweh is Salvation." Jesus is the only name by which we may be saved.
